Kingston in December is a marvelous place to be, as traditions across the world mingle in a harmonious display of end-of-year cheer. A jubilation for all to attend, and it has already begun. 1. Catskill Mountain Railroad: The Polar Express

Starting off strong and only going uphill from here, we have the immersive experience allowing you to relive the beloved movie, “The Polar Express”! From hot chocolate to the first gift of Christmas, enjoy this marvel of winter magic. Just be sure not to lose your ticket! Kingston makes for the perfect locale for such a reenactment, nestled at the cusp of the Catskill Mountains. Hop aboard the Polar Express throughout the month of December for a truly unforgettable experience. 2. Catskill Ballet’s Nutcracker

For the first time since 2019, the Catskill Ballet Theatre is pleased to announce the return of “The Nutcracker” throughout the month of December! Hosted by the Ulster Performing Arts Center right here in Kingston, what Yuletide season can be celebrated without enjoying this iconic Ballet? Be sure to check this holiday tradition sooner than later, as the theatre looks forward to seeing you there!

3. Annual Uptown Kingston Snowflake Festival

If you have never been to Kingston, know that this is the event to attend. And if you are a local, you know that already! Kick off December with a city-wide collaboration, with the simple goal of having fun. Sponsors from all around town provide us with the opportunity to meet Santa Claus himself, jam to live bands, laugh with juggler comedians, and so much more! Walking shoes are recommended.

4. Sinterklass Festival Day

Technically in Rhinebeck but too good not to mention, this one-of-a-kind event aims to honor the area’s Dutch heritage. Whether your Dutch or not, rest assured you will have fed your body and your soul. The honored animal for 2023 is the ant, as its diligence and teamwork are to be commended in this celebration of life, the end of the year, and the birth of 2024. Over 400 performers will be in attendance, along with an estimated hundreds of others from around Ulster County and beyond.

5. Artists and Makers Holiday Market

Have you taken the time to visit Artport Kingston lately? Well, here is your opportunity to do just that! This handcrafted experience features favorite local artists and budding businesses alike selling their wares—two stories of them! Peruse the aisles, hot cocoa in hand and humming along to holiday music and turn gift shopping into an immersive experience free from stress. Artport Kingston is located right at the Waterfront, along East Strand Street. Make note of this street, as come May, Hudson River Cruises will be running river tours aboard the Rip Van Winkle II once again!

6. A Gilded Age Christmas

All you Amazon Prime Video subscribers, here is your chance to live like Bertha Russell in the hit show! Take the time to stop by Staatsburgh State historic Cite a stone’s throw from Kingston this December, as the decorations to be found here will surely wow you—and maybe give you some lavish holiday decorating ideas for your house. Of note is that reservations are required for entry. Though, the added exclusivity simply adds to the unforgettable ambiance, if you ask us.

7. Wintertide on the Rondout Waterfront

Wintertide on the Rondout Waterfront is a magical winter celebration set against the scenic backdrop of the Rondout Creek in Kingston. This festive event transforms the waterfront into a winter wonderland, adorned with enchanting holiday lights that illuminate the night. 8. “A Holiday Celebration,” Chamber music Presented by Hudson Valley Baroque

Chamber music is yet another holiday staple, and for their final program of 2023, the Historic Huguenot Street’s very own Hudson Valley Baroque invites you to savor their themed live music. Space for this must-see event in New Paltz is limited, so definitely consider pre-registration! Local musicians will combine this classical music spectacular with history you may not be aware of, so be sure to take notes!

9. Into the Light at the Rosendale Theater

Whether you celebrate Christmas, Chanukkah, Kwanzaa or Yule, this coming-of-age holiday musical honors a variety of December traditions. Follow the journey that Lucia embarks upon with a magic bear, featuring a host of professional choreography, stellar acting, and even a few puppet figures.
